Colonels snap skid with 3-1 win at Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – After losing four five-set matches in their first six conference contests, the Centre volleyball team got its first Southern Athletic Association victory of the season as they defeated the Millsaps Majors in four sets.

HIGHLIGHTS

- With the scored tied at 22-22 in the opening set, Centre came through with the final three points, taking advantage of two Millsaps attack errors to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 win.

- Centre grabbed the early lead in the second set and never looked back, leading by as many as seven points on three separate occasions before winning by a score of 25-20.

- Millsaps took the third set 25-22 and jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the fourth, but Centre battled back to tie at 7-7 and from there, neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way. The Majors fought off four set points before running out of steam as the Colonels took the match with a 28-26 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- The Majors held a 48-37 advantage in kills over the Colonels, but Centre made 37 errors in the match compared to 53 for Millsaps. Savanna Roper paced the Colonels with eight kills, followed by Bailey Vernon with seven.

- The Colonels once again held an advantage in blocks over their opponent, led by Keeley Morton with five and Lizzie Royster with three.

- Playing more of a defensive role than in previous contests, Peyton Vacala finished with a career high 35 digs, topping the previous career high of 30 in a five-setter against Spalding from 2016. Vernon (19), Samantha Goldizen (18) and Kylie Cochran (10) all contributed double digit digs for the Colonels.

- Cochran finished with a match high 28 assists on the day.

- The dramatic fourth set victory for the Colonels featured five lead changes and 11 ties.

NEXT UP

Centre volleyball will stay on the road next week as they make their annual SAA trip to Georgia, beginning with a rematch against the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in Atlanta on Saturday.
