The Last Meeting
Centre 49, Sewanee 20 (11.3.18)
- The Colonels featured two 100-yard rushers in
Colin Burnam and
Trevor Carnell, while
Jaylon Hibbs,
Cody Estep and
Mack Cox each had a receiving touchdown from QB
Tanner Young in a blowout win on Senior Day.
- Sewanee never led, but was within 14-13 midway through the second quarter before Centre blew the game open by scoring 35 unanswered points.
- Centre's defense forced seven punts while the offense went a perfect 6-for-6 on red zone scoring chances.
Last Time Out
Millsaps 20, Centre 17 (10.5.19)
- Centre suffered its first three-game skid since 2004 in a narrow 20-17 loss in overtime last weekend at Millsaps.
- In a game dominated by defenses, the Colonels forced overtime with a late 34-yard touchdown completion from
Clark Payne to
Mack Cox on 4th and 16 with under a minute remaining on the clock.
-
Zarian Hunter Cure scored a touchdown in the first overtime period, but the Majors would walk-off with a game-winning field goal in the second OT.
Gold and White Defense
- Centre's defense has seemingly improved week to week, and currently leads the SAA and ranks 34th in NCAA Division III in third down percentage (28.9%).
- The Colonels are also first in the SAA (14th in Division III) in passing efficiency defense (91.58) and are second in the conference averaging 2.8 sacks per game.
Scouting the Tigers
- Sewanee is winless in 2019, going 0-5 with a conference-worst -32.0 scoring margin.
- The Tiger defense is allowing a gaudy 351 yards per game on the ground to opponents, which could favor Centre's rushing attack that ranks second in the SAA (188 ypg).
- Offensively, Sewanee has found more success moving the ball through the air than on the ground. Starting QB Alex Darras averages 188 yards per game, completing 52.9% of his passes with five touchdowns and four interceptions.
Next Week
- Centre travels to Conway, Ark., to face Hendrix, which received votes in the latest American Football Coaches Association poll.
- The Colonels hold a 4-2 series advantage against the Warriors, including a 45-6 rout last season in Arkansas.
