Colonels defeat Warriors in 37-34 overtime thriller

CONWAY, Ark. – After a comeback win on Homecoming Saturday against Sewanee, the high drama continued for Centre football as they made the trip west to face the Hendrix Warriors.

For the second time this season, the Colonels went to overtime with an opponent, however unlike the last time, the Colonels walked off with a 37-34 victory.

HIGHLIGHTS

- After Hendrix opened the game with a touchdown drive, Centre's first possession lasted exactly one play as Dameon Jones Jr. raced to the end zone from 56 yards out to tie the game with his career long run.
- The Warriors scored to open the second period, but Centre responded with a ten-play, 53-yard drive that was capped off by a goal line plunge for his second touchdown of the day.
- Hendrix quickly responded to the Centre score with an 82-yard scoring drive and an 18-yard touchdown run from Kip Vanhoose, and looked to hold the lead going into halftime.
- One of the most bizarre plays of the season came just before the half as Jordan Gunter made a long punt return, fumbled the ball at the Warriors' 19, only for Armon Wells to scoop up the loose ball and return it for a touchdown, making it 21-21 at the break.
- The Colonels grabbed their first lead in the third period as Clark Payne hooked up with Jay Becherer for a 15-yard scoring reception. The Colonels got the ball back, but an interception gave Hendrix the ball at the Centre 10 and Miles Thompson found Chad McGonigal for the tying score.
- After several defensive stops from both teams, the Colonels went on top 31-28 on a 39-yard field goal by senior Tommy Apostopoulos.
- With two minutes to go and no timeouts left, the Warriors drove down the field and a Centre penalty gave Hendrix a first down on the Centre 2. Oliver Hunter made consecutive stops on running plays, and then on third down, Jaylen Jones beat Thompson to the pylon to tackle the Hendrix quarterback for no gain. Hendrix's Sandy Burks connected on the chip shot field goal with no time remaining to force the game into overtime.
- Hendrix got the ball first in overtime and picked up a first down, but the Centre defense held strong once the Warriors got inside the 15 and Hendrix had to settle for a Burks field goal to go up 34-31.
- On Centre's opening possession of overtime, Payne found Breece Hayes for a clutch first down on third down, but the Warriors stuffed Jones for no gain and sacked Payne for a loss of six on consecutive plays, forcing the Colonels into 3rd & 16.
- With Centre's backs against the wall, Payne found Danville native Mack Cox for a 21-yard score to give the Colonels the 37-34 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- In addition to his career long run and two scores to start the game, Dameon Jones ran for a career high 132 yards on 27 carries for the Colonels.
- Centre's quarterbacks threw for 210 yards and a pair of scores on 20-36 attempts as nine different Colonels caught passes for the day.
- The Centre pass defense held Thompson largely in check for most of the day as the Warriors' signal caller threw for 243 yards on 24-42 attempts and was sacked twice by Clayton Bell and Cole McCarson.
- Defensively, Hunter finished with a career high 11 tackles, five of them solo efforts. Ryan Smith, Andre Evans and Jaylen Jones each finished with eight stops, including the clutch tackle made by Jones on Thompson at the goal line.
- The Colonels broke up seven passes on the day, with Keanan John leading the way with three.
