On Tap
- Coming off an overtime victory at Hendrix last Saturday, the Colonels return home to host Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m. inside Farris Stadium.
Series History
- The Colonels hold a sizeable 14-2 advantage over the Panthers, winning each of the last six meetings while scoring 42 or more in each outing.
- Centre won by a 56-20 margin last season in Birmingham, capping the 2018 regular season schedule with its highest point total of the year (more below).
- The last meeting in Danville was a 42-17 victory for Centre back in 2017.
-
Andy Frye is 10-1 all-time against the Panthers.
The Last Meeting
Centre 56, BSC 20 (11.10.18)
- Former Centre QB
Tanner Young tossed five touchdowns in just 19 pass attempts, and as a unit the Colonel offense averaged more than nine yards per play in a 56-20 rout at BSC.
- Centre faced just six third downs and had no fourth downs offensively.
-
John Wilson provided the defensive highlight with an 81-yard pick six, while
Eric Smith's eight tackles led the team.
Last Time Out
Centre 37, Hendrix 34 OT (10.19.19)
- The Colonels traveled to Conway, Ark., and escaped with a 37-34 overtime victory against a Hendrix team that was receiving votes in the AFCA Top 25.
- Centre's first possession lasted one play as
Dameon Jones Jr. went 56 yards to the house, setting up a career day for the sophomore running back. He would finish with 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
- A goal line stand from the defense at the end of regulation was necessary to help force overtime, and
Oliver Hunter and
Jaylen Jones each made timely plays to stuff the Warriors. Hunter racked up a career-high 11 tackles in the victory.
- After a Hendrix field goal in the first extra session, senior
Mack Cox caught the game-winning touchdown from
Clark Payne on a 3rd and 16 play.
Hunter's Big Game
- As mentioned above, Hunter was crucial in Centre's 37-34 OT victory at Hendrix. His effort was good enough to earn Southern Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week honors.
- He recorded 11 tackles – five solo – including 1.5 tackles for loss.
Scouting the Panthers
- Birmingham Southern got national attention last week when they knocked No. 7 Berry from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 28-15 victory.
- The Panthers have the leading offense in the conference, averaging 34 points per game and nearly 300 yards per game on the ground.
- Running back Robert Shufford leads the nation in rushing yards per game. He was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week last week after a career high 238 yards on just 26 attempts against Berry.
- Largely due to the strength of their running game, BSC has converted nearly half of their third downs for the season and has dominated time of possession to the tune of over 34 minutes per game. In their upset win over Berry, the Panthers controlled the ball for over 39 minutes.
- Defensively, Wes Guilford has picked off two passes this year to lead the Panthers and his ten pass breakups sit atop the conference standings.
Next Week
- The Colonels will hit the road to Memphis to take on the Rhodes Lynx at Crain Field.
- Centre has a 48-23-2 edge over Rhodes in the all-time series and has won each of the last five meetings against the Lynx, scoring 237 points across those five contests.
- In last year's contest in Memphis, the Colonels defeated the Lynx behind 315 passing yards and four touchdowns from
Tanner Young, who earned SAA Offensive Player of the Week honors after the game.
- In addition,
Cal Lewellyn earned a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week after forcing two Rhodes turnovers.
