Colonels beat Lynx on Senior Day to clinch share of regular season title

DANVILLE, Ky. – No. 14 Centre field hockey preserved its undefeated season on a rainy Saturday afternoon at South Turf as they defeated the Rhodes Lynx 3-2 to secure at least a share of the Southern Athletic Association regular season title. Prior to the game, Centre honored the careers of seniors Erika Bell, Caroline Brotzge, Olivia Carter, Savannah Elpers and Kristen Mulcahy.

HIGHLIGHTS

- Centre peppered the Rhodes net with shots in the first period, but they were turned away by keeper Nina Migneco. The Colonels finally cashed in at the 11-minute mark after a penalty corner when Savannah Elpers, playing in her first game since Oct. 6 at DePauw, scored off an assist from fellow senior Caroline Brotzge to take a 1-0 lead.
- Early in the second quarter, the Colonels increased their lead to 2-0 as SAA Defensive Player of the Week Olivia Carter found SAA Offensive Player of the Week Megan Coomes for the second goal of the contest.
- The Lynx made their first push right before halftime and got on the board with 32 seconds to go in the half on a goal by Hailey Mules.
- Both defenses controlled the action in the third period, with shots coming few and far between on either side. With a minute to go in the quarter, Mules scored her second goal of the game to tie the score.
- The Colonels were the aggressors during the fourth period, putting more shots on net and drawing even more penalty corners. Rhodes's Migneco made several saves during the stretch, and then Kristen Mulcahy made a clutch save for Centre at the 49-minute mark.
- With a little over five minutes to go, Kate Pilcher came off the bench and delivered the game-winning goal for the Colonels.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Pilcher's goal was just her second of the season and came just three minutes after she checked into the game.
- The Colonels tripled up the Lynx in shots, 18-6, and held a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- Centre also held a 10-2 advantage over Rhodes on penalty corners.

NEXT UP

The Centre field hockey team will wrap up its regular season on Nov. 2 with a trip to Sewanee. The Colonels, who defeated the Tigers 7-0 in a non-conference game on Oct. 20, can clinch the outright regular season title with a win.
