Colonels fall to Sewanee in four tough sets

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre volleyball team played the third in a five-game home stand as the Sewanee Tigers came to Alumni Gym for a conference matchup. The Colonels dropped a hard-fought battle to the Tigers in four sets.

HIGHLIGHTS

- Sewanee scored the first three points of the opening set and maintained the small lead for most of the period before the Colonels rallied to tie the score at 15-15. Centre kept it close the rest of the way, but the Tigers scored the last three points to win 25-20.
- The second set was close early on as Centre hung tough thanks to strong defense at the net from Aby Dallas and Meredith Phillips. The late stages of the set featured four ties and two lead changes, but in the end, a 7-1 run gave Sewanee a 25-21 victory.
- In the third set, the Colonels were the first team to make an extended run, taking their largest lead at 19-14 and prompting a timeout from the Tigers, who rallied to tie the score at 20-20. With the score tied, head coach Patrick Robidoux called a timeout of his own and effectively killed the Sewanee momentum, as the Colonels closed out the set with the final five points – including a pair of aces by Peyton Vacala – to take a 25-20 victory and extend the match.
- The fourth set played out in a similar manner to the first, as Sewanee held a small lead in the early stages and then kept the Colonels from getting over the hump. The Tigers never led by more than six points, but they led throughout and won by a score of 25-19 to take the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Alice Rodgerson tied her career high and led the Colonels with 17 kills. Savanna Roper and Josie Grace-Mudd each finished with nine kills.
- Phillips finished with 37 of Centre's 44 assists and added four kills, six digs, four blocks and two aces.
- In addition to her consecutive aces in the third set rally, Vacala led all players with 20 digs. Rodgerson added 13 digs as the Colonels held a 70-65 edge in that statistical category.
