ROANOKE, Va. – The Centre women's basketball team began its 2019-20 season in tournament action with the Jean Beamer Tipoff Classic at Roanoke College. The Colonels faced the North Carolina Wesleyan Bishops in the opening round and fell by a score of 81-60.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels hung tough in the early stages thanks to three-pointers by
Kylee Murray and
Kat Wilson, but the Bishops' Kayla Johnson made three long ones of her own to give NC Wesleyan a 23-14 lead after one period.
- A series of turnovers doomed Centre in the second period as the Bishops had runs of 7-0 and 16-0 to blow the game open and lead 46-22 at the half.
- The Colonels calmed down in the second half, outscoring the Bishops after the break, but the damage had been done in the first half, especially in the second quarter, as Centre fell behind by as many as 34 points in the third quarter before getting as close as 18 points in the fourth.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels shot 40 percent for game on 22 of 55 attempts compared to 50 percent shooting for the Bishops on 32 of 64.
- Centre also shot 40 percent from three-point range (8-20), but NC Wesleyan shot 47.1 percent (8-17).

Madison Marcum led the Colonels with 13 points for the game, with
Kat Wilson also finishing in double figures with 11.
- Rookie
Payton Herold and sophomores
Hannah Jackson and
Josie Thacker recorded their first career points with the Colonels.
- The Bishops outrebounded the Colonels by a 38-30 margin for the game.
