Colonels stifle Spartans for first win of season

ROANOKE, Va. – Centre women's basketball shut down D'Youville Sunday afternoon, winning by a 56-34 margin in their final contest of the Jim Beamer Tip-Off Classic at Roanoke.

The Colonels (1-1) held the Spartans (2-2) to 38 points under their early season scoring average, limiting D'Youville to a mere 24 percent shooting overall.

Madison Marcum finished with 12 points to lead the Colonels, and was named to the All-Tournament Team following the event. Mikayla Fee followed with 11 points in Sunday's win, while Ellen Hicks pulled in a career-high nine rebounds.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre set the tone by racing out to an 18-3 lead after one quarter. Macum drained a 3-pointer just 16 seconds into the game, and the Colonels led 15-0 before surrendering a single point.
- D'Youville was held to one field goal and turned the ball over nine times in the first 10 minutes.
- The Colonels continued their dominance in the second quarter, and took a 30-9 lead into the halftime break. The Spartans had only hit three buckets to that point, and Centre was owning the glass.
- Marcum knocked down a couple of 3-pointers in the third quarter, in which Centre yet again held D'Youville to single digits.
- The Spartans would out-score the Colonels in the fourth quarter, 16-11, but a comeback effort was futile.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre out-rebounded D'Youville 47-30, finishing with a 32% offensive rebounding effort and lofty 82% defensive rebounding mark. The Colonels reached 47 rebounds just once last season.
- After Hicks' nine boards, Josie Thacker followed with seven and Fee had five.
- Abigail Wehby contributed a team-high five assists and three steals.
- The Colonels had more second chance points (10 to 4), points in the paint (20 to 14) and bench points (23 to 17).
- Centre led for 39:44 of the game clock.
