Centre drops defensive battle to Otterbein in home opener

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's basketball fell by a 44-34 score to Otterbein Friday evening in their home opener, completing in the annual Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic.
 
The Colonels (1-2) were held to a season low in points by the visiting Cardinals (2-1), who were likewise limited offensively but managed
 
Kat Wilson accounted for more than a third of Centre's points, finishing with 13 on a 6-for-10 shooting performance.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre scored the game's first two buckets, but Otterbein used a 10-0 run in the first quarter to grab a 14-6 advantage.
- Ellen Hicks drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 14-9 heading into the second quarter.
- The Colonels clamped down defensively throughout the second, holding the Cardinals to a mere 2 of 13 (27%) from the field after the visitors shot 7 of 16 (44%) in the opening period.  
- That effort helped Centre trim the deficit to 21-19 at the half.
- Madison Marcum's layup early in the third quarter briefly tied the game at 21, but the Cardinals used a 13-4 stretch to regain a lead heading into the fourth.
- Wilson and Rachel Jennings hit consecutive shots in the paint to keep Centre in it early in the last period, but it wasn't enough as Otterbein maintained its advantage through the final buzzer.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Along with a season low 34 points, the Colonels were held to just 33% from the field and only 1 of 13 from long range. Most notably, Centre committed 19 turnovers to Otterbein's 7.
- Centre's defense held Otterbein to a 19-for-60 (32%) clip from the field, and the Cardinals also managed just one 3-pointer, but they benefitted from 19 Colonel turnovers.
- Abigail Wehby hauled in a career-high 11 rebounds, adding three assists and three steals.
- Abbie Scholz led the visitors with 18 points and nine boards.
 
UP NEXT
Centre closes the Classic Saturday at 3 p.m. with a meeting against Maryville. The Scots fell to the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, 72-51, in the event's first contest Friday evening.
