DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's soccer didn't skip a beat while entering postseason play Saturday, thumping Millsaps by a 9-0 margin at Andrew P. Amend Field in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament.
The No. 6/11 Colonels improve to 19-0 overall, and were led by a four-goal outpouring from senior
Alana Hughes. The Majors were bounced from the tournament with a 3-13 overall mark.
Centre has not lost a SAA Tournament match since the league was formed in 2012, and continues its quest for an eighth consecutive crown.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Nearly 20 minutes passed without a goal, but constant pressure from the Colonels eventually led to the flood gates being opened, beginning with Hughes' first tally of the day on an assist from
Sarah Sirkin.
- Less than five minutes later, Hughes scored again after a productive buildup from Sirkin and
Meghan Paynter.
- Sirkin herself was able to get on the board in the 28th minute, heading home a cross from
Brooke Smithson, and Centre would carry its 3-0 advantage into the half.
- Six second half goals helped the Colonels march into the semifinals with relative ease, and Sirkin doubled her output right away on an assist from Hughes.
- Hughes netted consecutive goals in the 56th and 66th minutes, officially setting a new career high in goals scored.

Abby Hegarty would join the scoring in the 75th minute on an assist from
Caroline Davis, and
Rachael Boule and
Julia Doran each scored goals from distance to put the finishing touches on the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre held Millsaps without a shot for the entire 90 minutes, completely shutting out an opponent for the first time this season. The clean sheet was the Colonels' fourth in a row and 14th of the season.
- Hughes' set a career high in goals scored against the Majors for the second time this year. She recorded a hat trick against the Majors back on Oct. 20.
- Sirkin totaled six points for the second time this season, finishing with two goals and as many assists.

UP NEXT
Centre will host the remainder of the tournament next week, beginning Friday with a semifinal matchup against Berry. The Vikings eliminated Birmingham-Southern on penalty kicks in the opening round.
