DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's basketball bounced back from a pair of weekend losses by defeating the Golden Eagles of Spalding by a score of 74-68 on Tuesday night.
The victory saw new career highs in points for both
Abigail Wehby (18) and
Rachel Jennings (10) as well as a career high 14 rebounds for
Mikayla Fee. Centre improves to 2-3 on the year while Spalding falls to 2-3.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels never trailed in the first period as they held the Golden Eagles to 3-14 shooting and Wehby poured in six points to give Centre a 15-11 lead.
- In the second quarter, Centre extended their lead to nine points after four free throws from Jennings and a short jumper from
Kat Wilson. The Colonels' lead bounced between five and nine points for the rest of the period as they headed into the halftime break up 29-24.
- Spalding made an early push in the opening minutes of the third period, connecting on a quick layup and three-pointer to tie the score.
- Centre bounced back with their biggest run of the contest. Wehby and Wilson each made jumpers, and following a three from
Madison Marcum, Wilson picked off an errant pass and found Wehby on a runout to cap off the 9-0 spurt. Three-pointers from Peyton Herold and
Josie Thacker gave the Colonels their biggest lead at 46-35 and Centre held a nine-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
- The Golden Eagles scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter and cut the Centre lead to 48-47 on a putback by Kendyl Powell, but Centre stemmed the tide as Wilson scored on the ensuing trip down the floor, and then after a Spalding turnover, Wilson connected on a three off a Marcum assist to give Centre a cushion.
- The last half of the fourth quarter featured a parade of free throws for both teams as Centre was able to make enough to preserve their lead and secure the six-point win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Wilson led all players with 19 points, with the career high totals from Wehby and Jennings representing Centre's other double figure scorers.
- In addition to the career high 14 boards, Fee chipped in eight points and three blocks.
- The Colonels shot 22-30 from the free throw line for the game compared to 13-25 for Spalding. This included connecting on 17 of 23 attempts during a long fourth period.
