DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Centre women's basketball snapped a three-game skid and upset No. 14/18 Marymount Thursday evening, opening the Daytona Beach Shootout in an impressive fashion inside the Ocean Center.
The Colonels (4-6) trailed at the half, but rallied late to upend the Saints (8-2), holding their opponents to just nine points on 3 of 11 shooting in the final quarter.
Kat Wilson again led Centre in scoring, recording 16 points, while
Ellen Hicks (13 points) and
Abigail Wehby (11) also finished in double figures.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Both sides were getting accustomed to the new environment in the opening period, combining to hit just eight field goals.
- Wilson and Marymount's Katie McShea seemed in rhythm, though, as each went 3-for-4 and scored 15 of the first quarter's 20 points. The Saints led 11-9 heading to the second quarter.
- Marymount outscored Centre 16-14 in the second quarter to carry a 27-23 lead into the break.
- Hicks powered the Colonels with nine points in the third quarter alone, helping Centre grab a lead midway through the period.
Josie Thacker's 3-pointer at the 4:10 mark made it 38-37 in favor of the Colonels.
- Five offensive rebounds in the quarter led to nine second chance points for the Colonels.
- Centre, which trailed by two heading to the final quarter, turned to Wilson and Wehby in the down the stretch, as the pair scored 14 of the Colonels' 16 in the fourth.
- Marymount led 49-44 with just over five minutes left, seemingly poised to close out the win. But Centre mounted a 12-3 run, ultimately holding Marymount without a field goal over the last six minutes.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels shot nearly 50% in the second half, and finished with more points off turnovers (12 to 8) and from the bench (11 to 7).
- Centre out-rebounded Marymount 29-28.
- Hicks led the team with six rebounds, adding two assists to her 13 points.
- Wehby led all players with five assists, chipping in three boards and a steal to go along with 11 points.
- Wilson has led the Colonels in scoring seven of the last eight games, and pushed her scoring average to 14.5.
