Centre wins seesaw battle against Mt. St. Joseph, 58-52

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's basketball prevailed by a 58-52 margin Monday against Mt. St. Joseph inside Alumni Gymnasium, in a game that featured nine ties and a whopping 17 lead changes.
 
The Colonels (6-6) earn their third win in a row, avenging a road loss against the Lions (2-8) last season.
 
Abigail Wehby led Centre with 16 points, adding seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Kat Wilson (13 points) and Ellen Hicks (11) each finished in double figures, as well.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- A jumper from Rachel Jennings helped Centre take an early 9-7 edge in the first quarter, but the visiting Lions used a 7-0 stretch to carry a lead into the second.
- Centre warmed up after a nine-point opening frame, outgoing on a 15-7 run to take a 24-21 lead midway through the second quarter. Consecutive 3-pointers from Kylee Murray helped the cause.
- The two sides would go into the halftime break tied at 28-28.
- Monday's third quarter held seven lead changes alone, but the Colonels came out with a narrow 45-43 advantage heading into the fourth period.
- Centre's defense clamped down on MSJ across the last 10 minutes, holding the Lions to just 3 of 14 overall and 0-for-5 from long range.
- A bucket by Ellen Hicks near the midway point made it 49-47 in favor of the Colonels, and proved to be the final lead change of the evening.
- Wehby scored eight of her 16 in the last 2:38 to help seal the victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre shot 42% (21-50) as a team, as Wehby, Wilson and Hicks sank at least five field goals apiece. On the other end, the Lions were held to a 34% (17-50) mark and only 5 of 20 from beyond the arc.
- The Colonels turned 13 MSJ turnovers into 17 points, and also held a slight 28-24 edge in points in the paint.
­- Mikayla Fee paced the team with eight rebounds, chipping in six points. As a team, the Colonels dominated the Lions with a 39-26 rebounding advantage.
