Colonels come up short in shootout at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – Centre women's lacrosse fell short in a 19-17 defeat Saturday afternoon at Baldwin Wallace.

The Colonels drop to 1-2 with the loss, while the host Yellow Jackets start their season 1-0. All told, the back-and-forth contest featured 11 ties and six lead changes.

Mary Katherine Hardy led the Colonels with five goals on eight shots, also corralling a career-high 11 draw controls.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre's Bella Tacogue opened the scoring barely more than 90 seconds into the match, and goals from Amelia Tomasulo and Hardy shortly after gave Centre a 3-1 advantage.
- Baldwin Wallace would reel off four unanswered tallies to take its first lead before Hardy and McKenna Hulette countered with a pair of unassisted goals that leveled the score at 5-5 midway through the period.
- The two sides see-sawed toward the end of the half, but a 4-0 stretch from the Colonels helped them take a slim 10-9 lead into the break.
- The Yellow Jackets netted the first three goals of second half, but again Hulette and Hannah Hardy had a quick answer to knot the game at 12-12.
- Centre took a 17-16 advantage with 9:50 left on a goal from Hannah Hardy, assisted by Abby Whitford, but Baldwin Wallace finished with three straight scores to regain the lead for the last time.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Mary Katherine Hardy's five goals match her career high, which she set a week ago at Otterbein.
- Hulette followed with four goals, as Hannah Hardy (3) and Tacogue (2) each had multiple scores.
- Centre and Baldwin Wallace were even in many statistical categories, with the Colonels holding slight edges in shots on goal (27-25), ground balls (24-22) and draw controls (22-15).
