CONWAY, Ark. – Three hundred eighty-three. That's how many wins head coach Greg Mason has after Centre's 62-49 victory over Hendrix Sunday – more than any other coach in program history.
Mason, who has averaged just over 19 wins per season since taking over in 1999, passes his former coach and Centre Hall of Famer, Tom Bryant.
The milestone win came against a tough Warriors squad in Southern Athletic Association play, moving the Colonels to 19-3 overall and 10-1 in-conference. Mason's Colonels again displayed ample depth and plucky defense while completing the regular season sweep over Hendrix (9-13, 5-6).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Both sides were slow to start offensively, although before long the Colonels began warming up after a couple of layups from
Art Walker.
- Centre reeled off a 15-0 extended run, taking a sizeable 21-4 advantage with less than eight minutes remaining in the first half.
- The Colonels defense limited the Warriors to a 1-for-13 start from the floor while forcing six early turnovers.
- Hendrix would eventually settle in, and closed the half on an 18-7 stretch to cut the Colonels' lead to 29-22 at the break.
- Walker led Centre with eight first-half points, as eight different players contributed points.
- The Warriors cut Centre's advantage to five to start the second half, but consecutive threes from
Perry Ayers, Walker and
Bailey Rakes gave the Colonels a 14-point lead again in a hurry.
- Centre wouldn't feel threatened the remainder of the contest, despite a late 10-0 run to close the game from the Warriors.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Walker led the way with 17 points, followed by Rakes with 10. Nine different Colonels scored in the victory, and as a team Centre shot above 45%.
- Defensively, Centre limited Hendrix to a 37% shooting effort while forcing 12 turnovers. The Colonels totaled six steals, led by
Tucker Sine's two.
- Centre owned the glass, out-rebounding Hendrix 36-29. Ayers had a team-high seven while Sine and
Jakob Spitzer followed with five apiece.
COACH QUOTE: GREG MASON
"I'm a bit overwhelmed to think of what just happened today. Success doesn't happen alone. So many people who have been great and have sacrificed so much for me. My family- my parents who have supported us for over 20 years. My awesome wife and little girl. And so many of our players and supporters of Centre basketball. I would also like to thank Coach Bryant's family who have been so supportive over the years, especially this last couple of weeks. Thanks to all- it's been a special journey. Here's to more exciting wins ahead of us."
