Sewanee’s second half run dooms Colonels

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's lacrosse led at halftime of Saturday's Southern Athletic Association opener at Sewanee, but the host Tigers reeled off seven unanswered goals to complete an 11-6 comeback victory at Hardee-McGee Field.
 
The Colonels fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in-conference while Sewanee improves to 4-3 (1-0).
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Sewanee's Cameron Acuff opened the scoring with a goal less than 90 seconds into the game.
- Nic Malubay netted an unassisted goal midway through the quarter, and Chase Poplin gave Centre its first lead with just 13 seconds left in the period. The Tigers won the ensuing faceoff and promptly scored, making it 2-2 after one quarter.
- Centre's John Morrison and Padraic Dermody would score minutes apart in the second quarter, regaining the lead for the Colonels.
- Again the Tigers beat the clock with a goal right before half, but the Colonels carried a 4-3 lead into the break.
- Following Sewanee's goal to open the third, Jack Shannon scored an unassisted tally.
- A Centre penalty allowed the Tigers' Drew Mullen to net a man-up goal, sparking what became a devastating 7-0 run across the third and fourth quarters for the hosts.
- The Tigers would claim 11 of 12 faceoffs during the second half, and converted both of their extra man opportunities to help secure the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Sewanee took 17 of 20 faceoffs overall, and also corralled 37 ground balls to Centre's 22.
- Dermody finished with two goals for the Colonels, and Leland Gray paced the team with five ground balls.
- Connor Jongewaard totaled 15 saves in the defeat.
