DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre field hockey rattled off four unanswered goals Sunday afternoon to defeat Washington College, 4-1, at South Turf Field.
The Colonels improved to 2-0 on the young season, sending the Shorewomen back east with an 0-2 record.
HIGHLIGHTS
- After a quarter of scoreless action, the visiting Shorewomen got on the board first just seconds into the second period after Kailyn Brandt cleaned up a deflected shot in front of the goal face.
- Centre wasted little time responding, as
Savannah Elpers found the back of the cage for the third time this season on an assist from
Meredith Wickenheiser in the 18th minute.
- Later in the quarter,
Megan Coomes put away a feed from
Alana Pugh on the right wing, giving the Colonels a lead they would not relinquish.
- With just more than a minute left in the half,
Shelby Young tapped home an entry pass from
Caroline Brotzge to make it 3-1 at the break. It marked Young's first collegiate score.
- WAC's Kayla Zapcic recorded eight saves in the third period after facing a barrage of shots, but Centre was able to increase the lead on
Kara Tipton's first goal of the season.
- The Colonels utilized several reserves to help maintain the 4-1 advantage throughout the fourth quarter.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre held a sizeable 25-4 edge in shots, putting 15 on goal. The Colonels also had nine penalty corners while WAC had none.
- Coomes' goal was her second of the year, matching her total output from her 2018 rookie season.

Kristen Mulcahy finished with one save in 60 minutes of action.
