DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's soccer cruised past visiting Berea Wednesday evening, winning by a wide 9-0 margin at Andrew P. Amend Field.
The Colonels, who moved up to No. 8 in the latest D3soccer.com Top 25, earn their 28th straight regular season victory in a row while improving to 5-0 overall. The Mountaineers leave Amend with a 1-3 record.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre's dominance was evident from the opening kick, and a breakaway goal from
Elizabeth Nelson put the home side on the board in the 12th minute.
- Nelson would score off a corner kick from
Alana Hughes about 10 minutes later, and quickly returned the favor by assisting on Hughes' goal in the 25th minute.
- Even though the Colonels swapped all 10 outfielders following Hughes' score, the momentum never shifted.
Rachael Boule continued the onslaught by cleaning up a ball in front of the goal face for her first tally of the year.
- In the 37th minute,
Kennedy Cline smashed home her first collegiate goal following a rebound off of
Brooke Smithson's shot.
- Smithson capped the first half scoring with a left-footed rip from some 30 yards out, making it 6-0.
- The second half proved to be much of the same in terms of possession, with Centre tacking on a trio of goals.
-
Mills Mullen scored barely two minutes into the period from an assist by
Meghan Paynter, marking her second goal of the season.
- Smithson added an unassisted tally to her productive evening in the 72nd minute, and
Julia Doran finished the night with her first career goal to make it 9-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre overwhelmed Berea on the field and in the box score, finishing with a massive advantage in shots (28-1) while earning six corners.
- For Nelson, it marked the second match in a row she's recorded multiple goals and gives her nine points in the previous two outings. Smithson finished with a similar five-point effort, recording her first two-goal performance for Centre.
- The Colonels' nine goals are the most since last season's 9-0 victory over Millsaps in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament. Centre also defeated Berea 9-0 when the teams last met back in 2017.
