Centre volleyball splits doubleheader at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Centre volleyball team competed in its second tournament of the season as they had their first two matches at the Sewanee Invitational, losing in straight sets to the host Tigers before returning the favor with a clean sweep of the Agnes Scott Aggies in the night cap.

HIGHLIGHTS

- After pulling to within a 13-12 deficit in the first against Sewanee, the Tigers went on a huge run, scoring 12 of the next 13 points to win 25-13.
- The next two sets were more closely contested, but poor starts put Centre in a hole in each of them as the Tigers completed the sweep with respective scores of 25-20 and 25-19.
- Against Agnes Scott, the Colonels had their best serving set of the season, finishing with eight aces, four by Meredith Phillips, as Aby Dallas converted the final kill in a 25-11 opening set victory.
- Centre used runs of 6-0 and 5-0 to break open what had been a close second set, eventually winning 25-15 after an Agnes Scott error.
- The third set saw Centre playing from behind until a 9-1 run turned a four-point deficit into a four-point lead. Samantha Merkley put home the final kill of the 25-21 victory as the Colonels sealed the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

- Savanna Roper led the Colonels with nine digs against Sewanee. Against Agnes Scott, Merkley and fellow newcomer Madison Montross led a balanced scoring attack with seven kills.
- The Colonels' 16 aces were a season high by a wide margin. Nine different players had at least one ace in the win, led by Phillips with four in the opening set.
