Colonels stun 12th-ranked Captains in shootout victory

CONCORDIA, Wis. – Centre field hockey claimed thrilling 2-1 shootout victory over No. 12 Christopher Newport Sunday afternoon in a neutral site meeting at Tomasini Stadium.

The Colonels (6-0), who were No. 24 in the latest NFHCA poll, had been on the wrong end of close battles against the Captains (4-2) seven times in the last eight seasons before Sunday's triumph.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre got on the board first when Savannah Elpers scored off of a corner insert last in the first quarter, getting an assist from Olivia Carter.
- Less than two minutes before half, CNU leveled the score on Mauri Ware's unassisted tally that made it 1-1.
- A deadlock ensued across the final two quarters, with shots even and two apiece, forcing the first overtime match of the season for the Colonels.
- They would get five shots while holding CNU to none in the two extra sessions, but couldn't convert.
- Sarah Biggs and Elpers each converted to open the shootout, giving Centre a 2-1 advantage following a miss by CNU's Abby Asuncion.
- The Captains would pull even after Sarah Mueller's make and a Colonel miss, but Emily Fry quickly gave Centre the edge with her shootout goal.
- Misses from both sides kept the shootout tally at 3-2 in favor of Centre, and the overall win was secured when Kristen Mulcahy successfully defended CNU's fifth try from Marcella Sabbagh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre's offense put five of its 12 shots on target, and the defense limited CNU to just five shots across the 80 minutes (one on goal).
- Elpers and Caroline Brotzge led the team with two SOG apiece.
