SALEM, Va. – Centre field hockey escaped with an overtime victory at Roanoke Saturday afternoon, preserving their undefeated record with a 3-2 decision at Kerr Stadium.
The 18th-ranked Colonels (7-0) got a game-winning goal from
Ellie Dunham less than four minutes into overtime, defeating the Maroons (3-2) for the second time in the past three seasons.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre got on the board just 68 seconds into the game, as
Savannah Elpers converted a goal off an assist from
Caroline Brotzge.
- Later in the first quarter,
Sarah Biggs doubled the lead with a shot to the left side of the cage.
- After not getting a shot off in the opening period, the Maroons increased their attacking effort in the second quarter, leading to a goal by Martha Hurley.
- Roanoke leveled the score on a penalty stroke goal in the third, and, despite a 9-2 advantage in shots over the second half, the Colonels couldn't answer in regulation.
- Centre dominated possession in extra time, getting off three shots before Dunham's game-winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The goal for Dunham was the first of her career, and gave the Colonels their second straight victory outside of regulation.
- Centre out-shot Roanoke 21-7, with a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Colonels also had an 8-3 edge in penalty corners.
