Garuba’s goal the difference in 1-0 shutout at Transy

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Centre men's soccer squad snapped a two-match skid Wednesday evening, defeating rival Transylvania, 1-0, under the lights at Paat Deacon Stadium.

The Colonels improve to 5-2-1 overall for the season, defeating the Pioneers – who fall to 2-3 – for the second year in a row.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre managed more attacking opportunities in the opening period, but it was nearly 40 minutes in before either side converted a goal.
- Alexander Garuba slotted home a goal from Will Newton in the 39th minute to make it 1-0, marking the senior's fifth score of the past six matches.
- Tate Johnson had two first half saves, one coming barely a minute after Garuba's goal to preserve a 1-0 halftime lead.
- The Colonels appeared to control possession in their attacking half of the field for much of the second period, and would go on to out-shoot the Pioneers 9-1 across the 45 minutes.
- Garuba nearly tallied his second goal on a free kick in the 77th minute, but a diving save from Drew Grisham kept the margin at 1-0.
- Transy won a corner kick in the final seconds, but Johnson corralled a headed effort to all but end the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre wound up with a sizeable 17-3 advantage in total shots, marking the fourth occasion this year the Colonels had 10 or more attempts than their opponents. Garuba had seven of those 17 shots, putting four on frame.
- Johnson and the rest of the Colonel defense also completed their fourth clean sheet of the season.
