Garuba, Johnson shine as Colonels blank Tigers, 2-0

DANVILLE, Ky. – Alexander Garuba scored twice and Tate Johnson recorded five saves as Centre men's soccer defeated visiting DePauw, 2-0, inside Andrew P. Amend Field Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels improve to 6-2-1 this season and move the all-time series to 8-9-3 against their former conference rival, while the Tigers slip to 5-2 and have their five-match winning streak snapped.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Garuba's free kick abilities were on full display early Saturday. The forward drilled home a goal from just outside the 18-yard box in the eighth minute to give Centre an early lead.
- Johnson recorded three saves in the first half, including one in the 30th minute off a dangerous header from DePauw's Jack Schrepfrman.
- Both sides had scoring opportunities in the second period, but the Colonels out-shot the tigers 9-3 and maintained a higher percentage of possession.
- Garuba would double Centre's lead in the 67th minute, pulling down a pass from Nathan Wilcox before making a man miss and curling in his seventh goal of the season.
- Perhaps the defensive highlight of the match came in the 88th minute, when Johnson had a diving save to preserve the clean sheet.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre managed a slight 13-10 advantage in total shots, with a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
- Johnson improved his season goals-against average to 0.69 and his save percentage to .850, recording his fourth solo shutout.
- The match featured 36 fouls and three yellow cards.
