DANVILLE, Ky. – Kristin Dean scored twice and
Alana Hughes contributed four assists as Centre women's soccer defeated visiting Franklin, 5-1, Tuesday evening at Andrew P. Amend Field.
The No. 9/14 Colonels improve to 10-0 overall and 7-0 at home, while dropping the Grizzlies to 0-8-1.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre capitalized on a couple set pieces early in the first half, beginning in the ninth minute when
Cameron Zak headed home a goal from Hughes' corner kick.
- Hughes supplied a similar assist in the 18th minute, this time connecting with
Sarah Sirkin on a corner. The goals were Zak's first and Sirkin's second of the year.
- Dean delivered a highlight-worthy goal in the 26th minute, smashing the ball from some 30 yards out past the outstretched arms of Franklin's keeper. It was reminiscent of her strike from a similar distance in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Huntingdon.
- Franklin's Taylor McDaniel was able to put the visitors on the board with eight minutes until half, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and snapping Centre's streak of five shutouts.
- In the 65th minute,
Meghan Paynter cleaned up a ball in front of the cage after touches by Hughes and
Elizabeth Nelson, marking her sixth goal while pushing the lead to 4-1.
- Hughes' corner proficiency was on display again in the 68th minute, as she served up Dean's second goal of the match off the set piece.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre controlled 67 percent of the possession throughout the match, as evidenced by a massive 29-2 advantage in total shots and a 16-0 margin in corner opportunities.
- Dean's two scores marked her second career multi-goal match.
- Hughes set a career high with her four helpers, topping her previous high of three, which she set in last season's match against Franklin.
- The Colonels had 28 individuals see action in the victory.
