Centre men shut out No. 20 Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Centre men's soccer team came away with its first shutout victory of the season as the Colonels defeated the host Haverford Fords in opening round action at the Jimmy Mills Tournament.

Haverford entered the season ranked No. 20 in the D3soccer.com Preseason Poll.

HIGHLIGHTS

- The Colonels got off to a hot start as All-American Alexander Garuba converted on a penalty kick less than three minutes into the contest to give Centre an early 1-0 lead.
- Both teams settled down after Garuba's scoring tally. The Fords withstood an early Centre onslaught and took the momentum halfway through the first half, but Tate Johnson made three clutch saves and Michael Vogt made a defensive save of his own to keep the Colonels up 1-0 going into the locker room at halftime.
- Midway through the second half, Centre saw a surge in scoring chances and capitalized on one as Kaeman Filiatrault took a cross from Garuba and put a header into the back of the net to give the Colonels a 2-0 cushion with ten minutes to go in the match.
- The Fords had two scoring chances in the final minutes, but one attempt went wide and Johnson denied the second to preserve the shutout for the Colonels.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- In addition to the penalty kick goal and the assist on the Filiatrault header, Garuba was the most aggressive player on the field, finishing with six shots for the day.
- Centre held a 16-12 advantage on Haverford in shots, but shots on goal were even at five apiece.
- Corner kicks were also an even statistic, with the Colonels and Fords each finishing with five.
