DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre field hockey recorded its second shutout of the weekend, blanking visiting Wooster by a 3-0 score Sunday at South Turf Field.
The Colonels improve to 4-0 with their third clean sheet of the year, while the Fighting Scots suffer their first loss and slide to 2-1.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The first half proved to be a defensive struggle, with Centre's back line especially stingy across the opening 30 minutes.
- Perhaps Centre's best scoring opportunity in the half came with four minutes until the break, when Wooster's Grace O'Leary's defensive save stopped a sure goal from
Savannah Elpers.
- The two sides went into the half tied at 0-0, although the Colonels finished with 12 shots while the Fighting Scots didn't manage any.
- Elpers got a measure of revenge in the third quarter, slamming home the game's first goal on a pass from
Caroline Brotzge after a set piece.
- Centre's offensive pressure increased dramatically during the third and fourth quarters. All told, the Colonels finished with 21 shots and 11 penalty corners in the second half.
- Elpers found the back of the cage again on a feed from Brotzge early in the fourth quarter, and less than a minute later returned the favor on Brotzge's third score of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre held Wooster to just one shot in 60 minutes, finishing with a massive 33-1 advantage in attempts. The Colonels also had 12 corners to Wooster's one.
- Sunday marked the second multi-goal effort of the season from Elpers, who claimed the initial Southern Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week honor.
