DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's basketball suffered a hard-fought 60-54 defeat against No. 11 Oglethorpe Sunday afternoon, dropping its first Southern Athletic Association game inside Alumni Gymnasium.
The visiting Stormy Petrels (15-1, 5-0 SAA) backed up their spot atop the SAA standings, escaping late against the Colonels (8-8, 2-3) to win their 13th in a row.
Kat Wilson dropped 20 points for the Colonels to lead all scorers, but the Petrels tipped the scales with 15 second chance points off 18 offensive boards.
HIGHLIGHTS
- After setting the single-game 3-point mark Friday,
Madison Marcum drained a couple early to help give the Colonels an 8-2 lead.
- The Petrels stayed afloat in the opening period at the free throw line, knocking down six freebies.
- Centre took a 17-16 lead into the second quarter after shooting above 53% from the floor across the opening 10 minutes.
- Oglethorpe took its first lead early in the second, and would maintain a slight edge throughout the period.
- Led by Wilson, who finished with seven points in the quarter, the Colonels closed with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 28-28 heading to the break.
- Oglethorpe went on an 8-0 run to open the second half, keeping the Colonels off the board for over five minutes of game time.
- The Petrels would out-pace the Colonels by a 14-8 margin to take a slim six-point lead into the final quarter.

Ellen Hicks hit a baseline jumper to cut the deficit to 50-47 midway through the frame.
- Oglethorpe push its lead up to 10, but baskets from Marcum and Hicks kept Centre within 57-52 with under a minute remaining.
- Wilson sank another bucket to trim it down to 57-54, but the Petrels would hang on to secure the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre held Oglethorpe to a season-low 60 points, well below its 75.5 scoring average. The Petrels shot just 32% overall, but went 19-for-24 at the charity stripe.
- The Colonels, meanwhile, managed a 4-for-7 outing at the free throw line. As a team, Centre shot nearly 39% from the field.

Abigail Wehby left her mark on the box score with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists, the latter two leading the Colonels.
- Oglethorpe grabbed 47 rebounds to Centre's 29, including the aforementioned 18 offensive boards.
