Late flurry carries Wittenberg past Centre in season opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Centre men's lacrosse dropped a narrow 9-8 decision in the 2020 season opener Saturday afternoon at Wittenberg, as the Tigers scored four late inside The Steemer.
 
The Colonels (0-1) led 8-5 early in the final period before the Tigers (1-0) hit four unanswered, giving them a season-opening win against Centre for the second consecutive season.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Rookie Will Hubbs scored Centre's first goal of the season – and the first of his collegiate career – on a man-up opportunity early in the first period.
- With the game tied 1-1 after one quarter, Chase Poplin put Centre back on top with a score three minutes into the second.
- The two sides traded goals as halftime neared, with Caleb Anderson John Morrison getting in on the scoring.
- Morrison scored early in the third quarter, and Hubbs followed with his own second goal that made it 6-3 with nine minutes left in the period.
- Noah Moderwell converted consecutive goals later in the third, pulling the Tigers within 6-5, before Nic Malubay worked his way around the crease and scored for the Colonels.
- Jack Shannon opened the fourth quarter with a goal to push the lead back to three, but it proved to be Centre's last score.
- The Tigers scored four unanswered, including two on man-up opportunities, to claim the comeback win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Connor Jongewaard recorded 11 saves for the Colonels.
- Wittenberg won 14 of 19 faceoffs, including 5 of 6 in the fourth period.
- The Colonels were tagged for two more penalty infractions than the Tigers, and in the second half had three more penalty minutes.
