Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Seth Stogsdill, Assistant Director of Athletics Communications

Cold fourth quarter sinks Colonels in 64-54 loss at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA – The Centre women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped by the no. 11/16 Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in the final road game of the regular season, as the Colonels fell by a score of 64-54. Despite the loss, the other outcomes in the Southern Athletic Association secured a top-four seed for Centre, meaning the Colonels will get to host quarterfinal action in the upcoming conference tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS

- After playing the nationally ranked Petrels close in a home loss in January, the Colonels played well at the start of the game as Kat Wilson and Abigail Wehby scored consecutive baskets in the final minute of the first period to give Centre a 17-16 lead after the opening frame.
- The Petrels picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter, but Centre hung tough and slowed the pace down in the closing minutes of the half as they went into the locker room down 31-27.
- Centre bounced back in the third, riding the hot shooting of Madison Marcum to claw back into the game, eventually tying the score at 47-47. Oglethorpe hit a free throw on their last possession of the quarter to go into the fourth with the slimmest of leads.
- In the fourth quarter, the Petrels opened the period with their best run of the game, scoring the first ten points to go up by 11 at 58-47. Centre would cut the lead back to six after five consecutive points from Wilson, but they could get no closer as Oglethorpe salted the game away at the free throw line.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Wilson led all players with 19 points while also posting a game high seven rebounds.
- Marcum added 11 points as the only other Centre player in double figures, thanks in large part to three three-pointers in the third quarters.
- The Colonels held a 31-28 advantage on the boards against the larger petrels.
