DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre football had a lot to smile about Saturday afternoon, pulling off a lopsided 42-21 victory against Hendrix inside Farris Stadium in the Southern Athletic Association opener.
Along the way, senior
Jordan Gunter became the program's all-time leader in receiving yards with 2,184, surpassing his former teammate, Cody Estep '18.
Senior
Patric Edwards also reached a significant milestone, reaching 1,000 career rushing yards.
The Colonels improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAA, while the Warriors slide to 1-3 overall with an 0-1 conference mark.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre delivered a first-quarter haymaker to set the tone for the ensuing rout.
Trentin Dupper capped an 8-play, 58-yard scoring drive with a touchdown pass to
Greer Stone on the first possession.
- After Centre's defense forced a three-and-out, the offense struck quickly again, highlighted by a 36-yard touchdown pass from Dupper to
Sam Murray. Later in the period, Dupper broke free on a 49-yard run to make it a three-score advantage before the first quarter expired.
- Gunter officially broke the receiving yardage record in the second quarter. Needing only a handful of yards, the Louisville, Ky., native caught a short slant from Dupper and took it 64 yards to the house.
- Edwards reached the 1,000-yard plateau in the quarter, as well, and would score on a four-yard run that made it 35-0 following the successful PAT.
- Centre's defense was just as dominant in the first half, forcing a punt or turnover-on-downs on each of the first seven Hendrix drives. The Warriors managed 16 combined yards on those drives, but eventually got on the board to pull within 35-7 at the half.
- Hendrix pieced together a strong drive out of the halftime break, but surrendered a fumble inside the 10-yard line to turn possession back over to Centre and deflate any comeback bid.
-
Will McDaniel scored in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Colonels.
