DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre field hockey defeated Mary Washington by a 2-1 score in double overtime Sunday, battling a heavy rain throughout the extra sessions at South Turf Field.
Meredith Wickenheiser scored the golden goal for the Colonels, who improve to 8-2 overall while winning their 18th consecutive regular season home game. The Eagles end their weekend road trip at 6-4 overall.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The first quarter went by without much incident, as neither team was able to get a shot off.
- Centre broke the scoreless draw midway through the second quarter following a corner.
Ellie Dunham redirected a shot from
Meredith Wickenheiser, beating the keeper for her sixth goal of the season.
- The Colonels held the Eagles without a shot or corner opportunity throughout the third quarter, maintaining their one goal advantage.
- Mary Washington leveled the score in the fourth quarter, as Paige Stewart finished a pass from Lauren Boucher on just the second shot on goal from the Eagles.
- While the third and fourth quarters experienced a light rain, the skies opened up as the 7-on-7 overtime session began. Amid a torrential downpour, the two sides played the first 10 minutes without a score.
- Three minutes into the second overtime, Wickenheiser gathered a corner pass from
Megan Coomes and slammed home the golden goal. It was her seventh goal of the season and second game-winner.
