Colonels win third straight in 2-0 shutout over Roanoke

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre field hockey scored early and locked down defensively in a 2-0 victory Friday evening against Roanoke, played under the lights at South Turf Field.
 
The Colonels improve to 9-2 overall with their third consecutive victory, dropping the visiting Maroons to 4-6.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre landed an early haymaker with two goals in the opening five minutes. On the first penalty corner of the night, Megan Coomes connected with Maran Lee, who fired a shot past the keeper for her fifth goal of the season.
- Minutes later, Coomes would score as she redirected a pass from Meredith Wickenheiser. It was her fifth goal of the year and doubled Centre's lead.
- Late in the first quarter, Sienna Joseph came up with a timely save on a shot from Roanoke's Emilee Wooten to preserve the lead.
- Both sides had three corner tries and three shots each in the second quarter, but the score remained 2-0 in favor of Centre.
- The Colonels played the third quarter similar to the first, taking an aggressive approach and out-shooting the Maroons 7-2.
- Joseph came up with two massive saves across the final two quarters to secure the shutout victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre put seven of its 13 shots on target, while Roanoke placed four of nine on frame.
- Joseph anchored the defense with four highlight-worthy saves, resulting in Centre's sixth shutout of the season.
- Wickenheiser moved her team-leading point total to 19 for the season, and she has a goal or assist in four straight games.
 
UP NEXT
Centre has a quick turnaround, hosting Concordia Wisconsin tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 p.m. in the Southern Athletic Association opener.
