Centre field hockey clinches outright league title with 4-1 win at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Centre field hockey team secured the outright regular season championship in the Southern Athletic Association after defeating the Sewanee Tigers 4-1 in today's season finale.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
 
- The Tigers struck first near the end of the opening period when Moira Darling scored off a corner with just over two minutes to go in the quarter.
- In the second quarter, the Colonels bounced back. Maran Lee found Megan Coomes for the equalizer at the 22-minute mark. Just a few minutes later, Lee picked up another assist, this time on a Kate Pilcher goal, to give Centre a 2-1 halftime lead that the Colonels would not relinquish.
- Coming out of the locker room at the half, the Colonels quickly got on the board again as Ellie Dunham recorded her ninth goal of the year just three minutes into the third period.
- In the fourth period, Centre put it away for the good as Coomes put away her second goal of the day and her team-high tenth of the season.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
 
- After surrendering a goal in the first quarter, Centre only allowed two more shots by the Tigers the rest of the way. The Colonels held a 15-0 edge in shots during the second and third quarters.
- Centre held advantages of 20-3 in shots, 9-2 in shots on goal and 14-5 in corners against Sewanee.
- Coomes recorded her third multi-goal game of the season in the win.
 
NEXT UP
 
With the win, Centre field hockey earned a bye as the top seed in next week's SAA Tournament, which will be held at Concordia-Wisconsin. Centre will face the winner of CUW vs. Transylvania in the semifinals.
