Colonels advance to NCAA Second Round following 3-1 win over Covenant

DANVILLE, Ky. – The 13th-ranked Centre women's soccer squad handled visiting Covenant by a 3-1 score Friday, moving on to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at Andrew P. Amend Field.
 
The Colonels improve to 16-1-2 overall this season and 7-1-1 in NCAA Tournament matches played at home. Centre has now advanced past the opening round in seven of 11 all-time trips to the national event.
 
The Scots' season ends with a 13-6-2 record.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre's opening goal came in the 13th minute, as Megan Sidaway one-timed the ball into the back of the net for her team-leading 10th tally of the season. Bri Tilley and Mills Mullen each garnered an assist due to their pinpoint passing ahead of the score.
- The hosts closed the period with two goals in the final six minutes. Bella Nelson converted her second of the season after a miscue from the Covenant keeper left her with an open net in the 39th minute. Lizzie Klehr provided the assist.
- With less than one minute on the clock, Klehr headed home a goal following a corner from Annabel Justice.
- Covenant was able to get one goal back in the second half, although Centre was able to go the entire period without most of its starting 11 on the pitch.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Klehr now leads the team with six assists this season. The goal was her fourth, giving her 14 total points to lead the bench unit.
- Centre held USA South Conference Player of the Year, Kailey Burrell, to one total shot. Burrell entered the match ranked among the top 10 in NCAA Division III with 18 goals this season.
- The Colonels had an 18-5 total shot advantage, including a 12-3 shots-on-goal edge.
- Jonelle Barron recorded two saves in goal.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonels host No. 21 Emory Saturday at 1 p.m. The Eagles advanced in a 4-0 victory over Wittenberg in Friday's second match. Centre and Emory played to a 0-0 tie back on Sept. 5 at Amend Field.
