Mullen’s overtime goal lifts Colonels into NCAA Sweet 16

DANVILLE, Ky. – Mills Mullen scored a golden goal with just six seconds remaining in overtime Saturday, sending Centre into the NCAA Sweet 16 with a 2-1 victory against Emory at Andrew P. Amend Field
 
The 13th-ranked Colonels improve to 17-1-2 overall and advance past the opening weekend of the national tournament for the fourth time in program history.
 
No. 21 Emory ends its season with a 12-5-3 record.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- The match lived up to its billing from the opening kick, as each side came away with early scoring opportunities in a back-and-forth contest.
- Centre struck first on a goal from Megan Sidaway in the 24th minute. She connected on a header for her 11th goal of the season, getting an assist from Mullen on the left wing.
- Leading 1-0 at the half, the Colonels eventually surrendered an equalizing goal to Emory's Olivia McBerry in the 55th minute.
- In the 69th minute, Jonelle Barron helped keep the score at 1-1 with a diving save.
- Maggie Corbett delivered a late shot off a volley in the final minute of regulation, but it was sent wide.
- Barron and the Colonel defense weathered an early attack from the Eagles during the opening minutes of the overtime period.
- As the 10-second countdown began, Bri Tilley crossed the ball in from the right wing and found Taylor Gebhart, who sent the ball toward the goal. Emma Platt deflected the shot for Emory, but the ball fell to Mullen, who quickly hit the back of the net to end the match.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Emory led Centre 23-18 in total shots, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Eagles also held a slight 9-7 edge in corner kicks.
- Sidaway now has three goals in the last four matches, including a tally in each NCAA Tournament match.
- Barron finished with five saves for the Colonels.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonels will face No. 9 Loras in the NCAA Sweet 16 next weekend at a location and time still to be determined.
