WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. – Centre men's basketball won its second straight game Saturday afternoon, defeating host Webster to finish the Webster Classic, played inside Grant Gymnasium.
Seniors
Jalen Williams and
Dustin Gerald scored 20 apiece to lead the Colonels, who improve to 2-3 overall. The Gorloks slide to 1-4.
Gerald was named the MVP of the Webster Classic, while Williams earned All-Tournament honors.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Gorloks went 7 of 10 to open the game from the field, grabbing an early 17-11 advantage.
- Centre hung around and eventually mounted a strong finish to the opening half, taking a 24-23 lead with six minutes remaining on a bucket from
Chez Moore. That sparked a 13-6 run that helped the Colonels take a 35-32 lead into the halftime break.
- Gerald and
RJ Smith carried the offensive load to start the second half, which continued to favor the Colonels. A 17-9 Centre stretch had the visitors ahead 52-41 by the under-12 timeout.
- The Colonels led by as many as 17 points down the stretch, denying any comeback bid from the Gorloks.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gerald turned in his second 20-point in as many days, going 8-for-16 from the field. He added five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
- Williams hit 6 of 9 from long range, recording a season high in points while recording three steals.
- Smith also finished in double figures with 14 points and led the team with eight rebounds and five assists.
- Centre set season highs in both 3-pointers mage (11) and 3-point percentage (48%).
- The Colonels also set lows in both personal fouls (7) and turnovers (8).
