DANVILLE, Ky. – The No. 13 Centre women's soccer team failed to advance past Sewanee Friday evening in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament semifinals, falling 5-4 in penalty kicks under the lights at Andrew P. Amend Field.
The Colonels' reign in the SAA Tournament ends with nine consecutive titles, as a different program will lift the trophy for the first time since the league's inception in 2012.
Centre moves to 15-1-2 overall while the visiting Tigers are 11-4-3 and advance to their first SAA title appearance in team history.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Sewanee's defensive-minded approach was evident early on, but Centre still came away with scoring chances.
Taylor Gebhart nearly headed home a goal after a
Brooke Smithson free kick in the 30th minute, and
Cameron Zak almost scored off a corner late in the half.
- The Tigers doubled down on their game plan in the second half, packing in the defense and regularly keeping five on the back line.
- Still, the Colonels totaled 10 shots during the second half, led by a handful of tries from
Megan Sidaway.

Jonelle Barron made a save in the closing seconds to preserve the 0-0 tie in regulation.
- Centre out-shot Sewanee 10-2 in the two extra sessions, but the Tigers managed to force penalty kicks, where they advanced, 5-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre finished with 27 shots to Sewanee's seven, but put only six on goal. The Colonels also held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
- Barron totaled five saves while turning in another shutout.
