Late run propels Scots past Colonels, 74-61

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Centre men's basketball fell by a 74-61 score Tuesday at Covenant, surrendering a late run inside the Barnes Physical Education Center.
 
The Colonels (0-2) held a 51-49 lead with less than eight minutes to go, but the host Scots (2-0) finished on a 25-12 tear to rally for the victory.
 
RJ Smith turned in his second double-double in as many outing this season, totaling 14 points and 12 rebounds to go with three blocks, three assists and two steals.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre scored the first three buckets of the game, but the hosts went on a 10-0 stretch to gain a slight lead they would maintain throughout the first half.
- Chez Moore delivered eight points off the bench in the opening 20 minutes as the Scots led 29-27 at the break.
- Dustin Gerald and Jaxson Banks led Centre's scoring efforts during the early portion of the half, combining for 16 points to help the Colonels grab a 51-49 advantage with under eight minutes remaining.
- The Scots hit 10 of 12 shots from the field to end the game, however, manufacturing a 25-12 run to pull away late.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Four Colonels finished in double figures scoring, as Smith and Gerald co-led the team with 14. Moore closed with 12 and Banks had 10.
- Covenant shot 27-57 (47%) overall compared to Centre's 24-64 (38%). Both sides were under 34% shooting from distance, hitting seven threes apiece. Banks and Jalen Williams each had multiple 3-pointers for the Colonels.
- The Scots held a 41-32 rebounding advantage.
 
UP NEXT
Centre is off until next Monday when it hosts in-state rival Transylvania at 7:30 p.m. inside Alumni Gymnasium.
