ATLANTA – Centre women's basketball fell by a 73-63 score Friday evening against Southern Virginia, competing in the Oglethorpe Holiday Classic inside the Dorough Field House.
The Colonels (3-5) surrendered an 18-0 run to the Knights (7-3), dropping the first ever contest between the two programs.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Knights got off to an efficient start, shooting 7 of 11 overall to lead 14-6 by the first quarter media break.
- Centre managed to close the gap near the end of the period, getting late buckets from
Emma Rose Vincent and
Presley Chirico to pull within 20-16.
- The Colonel defense held the Knights without a bucket for the first three minutes of the second frame, and a layup from
Bailey Rucker midway through the quarter gave Centre its first lead of the game at 24-22.
- Southern Virginia changed the landscape of the game with an 18-0 run that spanned the end of the second and beginning of the third quarters, opening up a 47-30 lead.
- Centre answered with an 18-8 stretch to claw back into the contest.
- Consecutive jumpers from Chirico later in the fourth period had the Colonels in striking distance at 65-60, but the Knights were able to close out the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Chirico scored 20 points for the fourth time this season, adding three rebounds and two steals.

Natalie Duggins followed with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, good for her third double-double. Vincent also finished in double figures with 10 points, chipping in six boards.

Payton Herold led Centre with six assists and
Rachel Jennings recorded five.
- Centre held SVU to just 4-for-24 (17%) from long range.
