Centre baseball splits home opener doubleheader against Oglethorpe

DANVILLE, Ky. – After opening the season with a pair of ranked wins last week, the Centre baseball team welcomed the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels to Gary Wright field for non-conference doubleheader action. After giving up three runs to the Petrels in the ninth inning of a 5-2 loss to start the series, Centre bounced back with a 5-4 victory in game 2.

GAME 1 RECAP

- The Colonels got on the board first in the bottom of the first as Patrick Hope singled to score Jamie Laframboise.
- In the fourth inning, Centre struck again as Hope and Will Ahrens led off with singles to put runners on the corners. Joshua Cunningham's single put the Colonels up 2-0.
- Oglethorpe manufactured a run in the fifth without a ball leaving the infield, but Jake Holloway escaped the jam with the lead intact. The Petrels tied the game in the next inning following a Centre error.
- After being held to three hits through eight innings, the Petrels had four hits in the top of the ninth and scored three runs to break the tie and go up 5-2, which proved to be the final score.

GAME 2 RECAP

- After freshman Jess Miller pitched out of a predicament to start the game, the Colonels again struck first as Chris Esselman doubled and later scored on a base hit by Jake Holloway.
- The Colonels tacked on another run in the second inning after consecutive doubles by Cole Fergusson and Laframboise.
- In the third, Hope singled, stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored following a base hit by Teddy Holloway.
- Karson Thompson kicked things off for Centre in the fourth, leading off with a walk and eventually scoring on a Petrels error. With Fergusson on third following the error, Laframboise lined one up the middle to make it 5-0.
- The Petrels finally got to Miller in the fifth with two runs on three hits, but Miller avoided further damage and Centre took a three-run lead into the sixth.
- Things got dicey for the Colonels in the seventh after the Petrels scored a pair of runs, but Will Cline stopped the momentum with a strike to second base to snipe an attempted steal of second. Luc Morgan then struck out the last batter to maintain the lead. Morgan then recorded three strikeouts in the ninth to preserve the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
