Colonels cruise past Panthers, set program’s SAA scoring record

DANVILLE, Ky. – There was no late drama for Centre women's basketball on Saturday, as the Colonels coasted to a 94-74 victory against Birmingham-Southern in Southern Athletic Association action inside Alumni Gymnasium.

Centre (2-4, 2-4 SAA) needed a late basket from Presley Chirico to secure Friday's win against the BSC (2-9, 0-6), but the home side took care of business early in Saturday's contest.

Centre's 94 points were the most against any SAA opponent in school history, and the most in any competition since November 2006.

Chirico and Taylor Garrett each set career scoring highs with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Ellen Hicks completed a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

HIGHLIGHTS
- The opening quarter was choppy and featured 22 combined free throws. Still, Centre went into the second period with its biggest advantage to that point at 26-20 following baskets from Hicks and Emma Rose Vincent.
- The Colonels opened the game up in the second quarter, claiming a 39-27 advantage following a traditional 3-point play from Payton Herold. They took a 49-34 lead into the half, scoring 36 of those 49 points in the paint.
- Abigail Wehby connected on a pair of free throws past the midway point of the third quarter to push Centre's lead past the 20-point mark, 68-48. Minutes later, Natalie Duggins sank a jumper to signal the Colonels' largest margin of the day, 75-48.
- The Panthers failed to submit a comeback bid in the final frame as Centre secured the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
