Late goal spoils Centre’s home opener against Berry

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision Saturday afternoon to Berry, playing in its home and Southern Athletic Association opener at Andrew P. Amend Field.

The Colonels (1-1, 0-1 SAA) led the Vikings (2-1, 1-0) at the half, but the visitors scored twice in the second period to defeat Centre for the first time since 2015.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Ryan Roussel provided an early highlight for the Colonels, cutting through three Berry defenders in the 12th minute before putting a shot on goal. Jose Palacios made a diving stop for the Vikings to keep the match scoreless.
- Centre would get on the board in the 30th minute, as freshman Sota Ippongi made shook his defender and sent the ball in from the wing. Roussel was on the other end, slotting home his first goal in a Colonel jersey.
- The Colonels led 1-0 at the half, but the Vikings struck in the 65th minute as Zachary Ernst got behind the defense and found the back of the net.
- Tension rose with the score level at 1-1, and in the 71st minute rookie Sam Brunner made a timely tackle to prevent a close shot in near the penalty area.
- Roussel got another great shot off just minutes later, but again Palacios was equal to the task.
- Haydon Korfhage delivered an excellent save himself in the 80th minute to preserve the tie.
- Berry had the final say, however, as Bear Crystal scored what became the game winner in the 84th minute.
