DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's soccer scored early and often Saturday against Birmingham-Southern, finishing with a lopsided 9-1 victory at Andrew P. Amend Field.
Centre improves to 3-1-1 overall and 3-0 in Southern Athletic Association action, sending the visiting Panthers home 6-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in-conference.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Although a lightning delay pushed the match back by 30 minutes, the Colonels suffered no false starts on the pitch as
Abby Hegarty scored less than three minutes into the contest on an assist by
Mills Mullen.
- The Panthers' Sydney Barrow briefly leveled the score in the sixth minute, but Hegarty fired home her second goal soon after to regain the lead for Centre.
- Mullen scored the first of her two goals in the 19th minute on a helper from
Sarah Sirkin, and Hegarty officially notched her first career hat trick in the 28th minute after a handball awarded the Colonels a penalty kick.
- Rookie
Bri Tilley scored her first collegiate goal 10 minutes later, returning a shot that
Brooke Smithson sent off the post. She then headed home a cross from
Rilee Britton barely 100 seconds later to make it 6-1.
- Tilley's classmate,
Annabel Justice, also got her first goal after converting a pass from
Lizzie Klehr just moments before halftime.
- Centre continued to dominate possession and added two more tallies in the second period.
Maggie Corbett found the back of the net for her first goal in a Centre uniform, and Mullen capped the scoring on a goal from Klehr.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Mullins finished with a personal-best six points on a pair of goals and assists.
- Centre put 17 of 25 shots on frame while limiting BSC to just three total attempts.
