Centre baseball splits doubleheader to take series against Millsaps

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball wrapped up its season series with the Millsaps Majors on Sunday. The Colonels soundly defeated the Majors 9-1 in the first game before falling 12-5 in the second game. Sunday's results marked the first conference series win for the Colonels this season.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

- Jake Holloway got the start for the Colonels and found himself in a jam in the first inning as the Majors loaded the bases with one out. However, Holloway escaped damage by striking out the next two hitters and getting out of the inning.
- In the bottom of the first, the Colonels got on the board. After a hit by pitch and an error, Karson Thompson found himself on second base and Patrick Hope ripped a base hit up the middle to give the Colonels their first run. Later in the inning, with two outs, Dillon Di Iorio worked a walk and Hope scored after a Majors error. Joshua Cunningham's single gave Centre its third run of the inning.
- The Majors got a run back in the second and things calmed down for a couple innings before the Colonels lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Holloway and Di Iorio each drove in a pair with singles and the Colonels took advantage of two more Millsaps errors. All told, by the time the rally was over, the Colonels had sent ten men to the plate and scored six runs on just four hits.
- Chris Esselman retired the side in the seventh inning to put a cap on Centre's third consecutive win.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

- Centre got on the board first once again as Esselman delivered a clutch single with two outs to score Thompson.
- Millsaps rallied with three in the third on a walk, a balk and two hits, but the Colonels made a big rally in the bottom of the fifth.
- J. Ross led off by reaching on a Majors error and then went to second on the second balk call of the game. Singles by Will Cline and Jamie Laframboise cut the deficit to 3-2. Hope was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Holloway's two-run single – his second of the doubleheader – gave Centre the lead. The Colonels tacked on one more run on an Esselman sacrifice fly to cap off their run and go up by two.
- In the sixth, the Majors rallied against the Centre bullpen, sending a dozen batters to the plate and scoring eight runs to take an 11-5 lead. Millsaps would add an insurance run in the seventh to go up 12-5, where it would stay the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
