MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Centre men's soccer team entered the season finale at Rhodes needing a victory to extend their season and earn a berth into next week's Southern Athletic Association Tournament. Behind three second half goals, the Colonels defeated the Lynx by a score of 3-1 to secure the no. 4 seed in the conference.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Both teams had decent scoring chances in the early stages of the match, but couldn't get anything by the opposing keeper.
Haydon Korfhage made a pair of key stops for the Colonels in the first 15 minutes.
- With three minutes left in the first half, Centre had its best look at a goal, but it was wiped off with an offside call and the two teams entered the locker room scoreless at halftime.
- Early into the second half, the Colonels struck.
Sota Ippongi got on the board six minutes into the half on a free kick to put Centre on top.
- The Colonels kept the pressure on for the next 30 minutes, and while Rhodes had two corner kicks, the Lynx didn't register any shots.
- Following a yellow card for Rhodes at the 72-minute mark, the Colonels got another free kick and
Ryan Roussel converted to put Centre up by two.
- Less than a minute later, Rhodes got on the board to cut the deficit in half. With momentum on their side, the Lynx attacked, but Korfhage made another critical save with ten minutes left.
- With seven minutes to go, the Colonels pulled off an excellent piece as Roussel's corner kick found its way to
Will Newton, who put the match away with a goal as the Lynx could not attempt another shot.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- In a statistically even contest, Centre held small edges of 10-7 in shots and 6-4 in shots on goal.
- After starting the conference slate 0-3, the Colonels clawed back in the standings and outscored their last three opponents by a combined 13-1.
