Centre thumps BSC to punch ticket to SAA title match

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Centre men's soccer defeated Birmingham-Southern by a 4-1 margin Friday evening, upsetting the top seed and host of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament in the semifinals.
 
The Colonels (4-3) are in the SAA Tournament finale for the fifth consecutive season – having won three of the last four – while avenging a 1-0 loss to the Panthers (9-4) from earlier this spring.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- Haydon Korfhage came up with five saves on BSC's first five shot attempts.
- Sota Ippongi scored in the 24th minute to break the scoreless match, and the Colonels carried that 1-0 lead into the half.
- Ryan Roussel scored his team-leading sixth goal early in the second period to double Centre's lead.
- Senior captain Will Newton helped add insurance with consecutive goals, the first of which came on a penalty kick.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre, which was shutout in the teams' regular season meeting, out-shot BSC 17-12, including a 14-8 mark in shots on goal.
- Korfhage finished with seven saves in the win.
