DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's soccer returned to "normal" action for the first time since 2019 Wednesday evening, kicking off the 2021 season with a 2-1 overtime victory over Mount St. Joseph at Andrew P. Amend Field.
The Colonels, who enter the fall ranked No. 19, got a golden goal from senior
Taylor Gebhart midway through the first extra session, negating a late score during regulation from the Lions.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre maintained well above half the possession during the first half and out-shot MSJ 9-0.
- The Colonels would convert one of those shots in the 25th minute, as substitute
Lizzie Klehr found the back of the net with her right foot to mark the first goal of the season and the first of her career.
- It was much of the same in the second half, with the Colonels holding a large advantage in total shots and time of possession, until the 86th minute, when MSJ's Hannah Surber scored from distance to pull the visitors level.
- Centre had a handful of chances early in overtime, with Gebhart,
Megan Sidaway and
Elizabeth Nelson each coming away with quality tries.
- Gebhart finally ended the affair in the 95th minute, easily tapping home the ball after
Cameron Zak's long pass escaped the goalie.
