NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Centre women's soccer ended the weekend on a high note, defeating Virginia Wesleyan 1-0 in the Captains Invite.
The No. 19 Colonels will head back home with a 4-1-1 record, dropping the Marlins to 1-2 in the teams' first ever meeting.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre got off three shots in the opening minutes of the contest, including one from
Megan Sidaway that required a save from the Marlins' keeper. The remainder of the half passed without either side finding the back of the net.
- In the 61st minute, the Colonels capitalized on a Virginia Wesleyan foul just outside the 18-yard box.
Elizabeth Nelson sent the ball in on the free kick and
Cameron Zak volleyed it home to put Centre ahead.
- The Marlins had one scoring chance via a free kick in the 81st minute, but the shot sailed high and they wouldn't threaten the remainder of the match.

- Centre finished with nine shots to Virginia Wesleyan's four. The Marlins only put one shot on frame, which was saved by
Jonelle Barron.
- The Colonels held a slight 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
