LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 18 Centre field hockey squad dropped its second contest in a row Sunday, falling by a 4-1 score at Washington & Lee.
The Colonels slide to 6-2 overall while the Generals, who received votes in the latest NFHCA Coaches Poll, improve to 6-0.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Washington & Lee took an early advantage after Grace Weise scored less than two minutes into the game. Kailey Fitzgerald doubled the score in the second quarter, rebounding the ball after
Sienna Joseph saved a pair of shots.
- Centre managed a handful of shots later in the period, but trailed 2-0 at the half.
- The Generals took a 3-0 lead early in the third quarter after Freddie Tobeason deflected the ball into the cage following a corner.
- The Colonels cut into the lead in the 41st minute after
Meredith Wickenheiser converted a penalty stroke goal. It was her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
- A fourth goal from W&L in the final quarter helped secure the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Washington & Lee totaled 21 shots to Centre's 13, including a 16-10 edge in shots on goal. The Generals also had a 5-2 advantage in corner opportunities.
- Joseph had five saves for Centre, and
Carlie McKenry had six after coming on at halftime.
- Wickenheiser took five shots to lead Centre.
