DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre field hockey began its 2021 season with a Saturday morning matchup against the Gators of Allegheny College in tournament action at South Turf. The 17th ranked Colonels defeated the Gators by a score of 2-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The first shot of the season produced the first goal of the season for the Colonels as Kate Pilcher fired a laser blast into the back of the net to give Centre an early 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game.
- The Colonels continued to pepper the Allegheny net with shots but could not put another tally on the board on the first half as they went to the locker room with a one-goal lead.
- Early in the third period, the Gators stopped a shot by Meredith Wickenheiser, which led to a scramble around the net. Ellie Dunham ended up with possession and scored to give Centre a 2-0 lead.
- The Gators got on the board with five minutes to go in the game, but Centre's defense held Allegheny without a shot on goal the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre outshot Allegheny 18-3 for the day, including an 11-1 edge in shots on goal. Dunham led the way for the Colonels with four shots.
- Bella Estes and Megan Coomes each got credit for an assist on the scramble that produced the eventual game winner by Dunham.
